Veneers & crowns – is it the right option for you?

Modern technology has brought many benefits to dentistry. One that you might not have noticed is the ability to make patient-specific veneers and crowns to improve the function and appearance of your teeth.

What are porcelain veneers?

TVeneers are thin slivers of porcelain that are bonded to the outer surface of your incisor teeth, to correct minor misalignment, remove “dark triangles” resulting from gum recession, or to conceal unsightly, broken or discoloured natural teeth. The process is simple, beginning with an impression of your existing teeth which is transferred to a computer planning software. The shape of the veneer can then be created with great precision, and the veneer is milled directly from the computerised plan. A small layer of your natural tooth is removed to provide a stable bonding surface, and the veneer attached to it.

What are dental crowns?

Crowns are much more extensive, but essentially work in a similar way to veneers. Once again the planning process starts with an impression of the existing teeth to facilitate computerised planning, followed by the milling of a porcelain shell that will fit over the prepared tooth.

What can dental crowns and veneers fix?

Veneers offer non invasive cosmetic benefits, in fact, this cosmetic restoration can fix various dental issues such as, damaged or cracked enamel, minor chips, minor misalignment, and eroded, short, or widely spaced gap between teeth. Dental crowns can fix functionality issues as well as can provide cosmetic benefits. For example, a tooth that has cracked due to decay or trauma can be fixed by crowns.  Crowns are useful to enhance the strength of tooth. They can also give protection to your tooth it if you have had a root canal therapy. In the case of both crowns and veneers, modern techniques allow a fine degree of control over the colour of the porcelain, to accurately match the colour of the adjacent teeth, giving a beautiful, natural smile. For this reason, if teeth-whitening is part of your smile makeover, we recommend that you complete it before having your veneers.
